The Pier: 1889 to 1989

  • 3 albums
  • In 1889, a 3,000-foot-long pier was constructed in downtown St. Petersburg for the Orange Belt Railway. The Railroad Pier was the first of four early piers preceding the opening of the 1,400-foot-long Million Dollar Pier in 1926. That pier was replaced in 1973 by the current pier, with its familiar inverted pyramid. The Pier, as it is known, is slated to be closed in May to make way for The Lens. • On March 29, 1953, the deadliest fire in Pinellas County history swept through a Largo nursing home, killing 32 infirm elderly people and one heroic nurse. The fire broke out in the kitchen storage room of Littlefield Nursing Home, which was near what now is 110th Avenue N and Ridge Road. Quickly, the fire spread to the women's dormitory, then to quarters where male patients were sleeping. Many of the 57 patients, ages 55 to 94, were feeble or senile and never left their beds as the flames raced through the facility. Twenty-five patients managed to escape.
